The W, Wyvern, class corvettes are the first of a new class of ocean going ships that have been built by England to counter the upsurge in piracy in the waters of the Anglo-Celtic sea zone and the trade routes beyond. Ever since the capture of the SS Dumbarton by Galician pirates there was heated debate within the Anglo-Celtic Confederation over the safety of shipping. With Scottish naval assets deployed in their standard oil field protection duties and Irish reluctance to expand their commitments there was a distinct capability gap that the English Navy volunteered to fill. A prototype hull was constructed by the Cammell Laird shipyard developed from existing pre-Fall designs for a fast anti-piracy vessel with excess hull capacity for future upgrades. ENS Wyvern passed her sea trials and three new corvette hulls were laid down, one conveniently at the Scottish Govan Shipyard, with the approval of all the Anglo-Celtic nations.
In her first yearly maintenance Wyvern was retro-fitted with the Sea Spear multirole missile based on a pre-Fall Royal Navy design, as where her sister ships in turn. Plans to adopt the Sea Spray decoy system are also in hand but not yet implemented.
